Think We – Day 4:

September 27, 2010

In the week leading up to Free the Children‘s We Day, I will be posting one reason each day why I “think WE.” This is day four.

I’m going to be honest. I’ve been trying to write this post for two hours now, and I just can’t get the words right. I’m trying to tell you about a night from this summer that inspired me more than anything has in years, but I’m beginning to think that it’s one of those experiences that you had to be there for. Nevertheless, I’m going to try.

A month ago, I was sitting around a campfire with some of my favourite people in the whole world. I spent a huge portion of my childhood and teen years at camp, so I was already a big believer in the magic of campfires. But this night was magical in an entirely different way. We had been asked to share a personal story – we were supposed to complete the sentence “I mobilize because…”

I don’t know what I was expecting, but the stories I heard that night were of incredible courage. I was reminded that living in North America doesn’t in any way guarantee an easy life, and I realized (yet again) just how lucky I have been. Something strange and wonderful happens when you realize how much strength you are surrounded by: you feel unstoppable. I am going to be living off the feeling I got that night for a long time.
