Think We – Day 7

September 29, 2010

In the week leading up to Free the Children‘s We Day, I will be posting one reason each day why I “think WE.” This is day seven.

We Day, for me, is about stories. To understand this, you should know that I was more or less raised on story books and Earl Grey tea. The characters I met in story books and movies and on TV were my friends – from Franklin the turtle and the paper bag princess to Fred Penner, Polkaroo, Aladdin and Simba. For me, there is nothing better than a good story, whether I’m reading a book, watching a movie, or having coffee with a friend. I love hearing them, and I love sharing them.

When I think about We Day, it always amazes me that a single day (tomorrow!!!! no, I’m not sure if I included enough exclamation marks.) is enough to inspire an entire year of action. But by now, it shouldn’t surprise me. The day is so packed full of stories – inspiring stories, joyful stories, stories of strength and courage and passion – that throughout the year there will always be something to draw on for inspiration. Whether you remember Elie Wiesel spreading a message of peace and human dignity, or you’re singing K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag, or you’re remembering Craig and Marc Kielburger say that we are the generation that we have been waiting for, there will always be something pushing you to speak up, stand up, take action.
